Utah Valley University invites applications for a Teaching Lab Manager for the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department to start October 1, 2025.
The Mechanical and Civil Engineering (MCE) Teaching Lab Manager assists faculty for the Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Pre-Engineering programs. The lab manager supervises the various laboratories, maintains lab equipment, constructs new lab setups, and teaches students using the laboratories. The lab manager ensures and maintains a safe, clean, and organized working laboratory environment.
The new Scott M. Smith Engineering Building is in the final construction phase and is expected to be completed by December 2025. The candidate selected will play a crucial role in helping to develop, purchase, set up, and manage the new laboratories associated with the Mechanical, Civil, and Pre-Engineering programs for this new building.

Summary of Responsibilities
- Develops and implements laboratory policies and standard operating procedures.
- Monitors students' performance with respect to safety procedures and operation, and maintains a safe, clean, and organized working environment, including facilities and machines.
- Teaches the equivalent of one two-credit hour lab course for an academic program in the MCE Department as the instructor of record.
- Maintains tool and supplies inventory, maintains lab course consumables. Demonstrates safe and proper use of equipment and machinery to students. Maintains service logs where appropriate.
- Works with CET IT to ensure that department and engineering lab computers and software are kept up-to-date and functioning and that students, faculty, and staff are able to access and utilize them.
- Ensures that labs are accessible to students outside of class on a schedule approved by the department chair, to facilitate student work on assignments, labs and projects.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering or related field and two years' experience; or a Master's degree in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in a related field preferred.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the use and maintenance of automated manufacturing facilities and equipment.
- Knowledge of ordering and inventory control of supplies, equipment, and/or services.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment protocols and procedures.
- Knowledge of troubleshooting procedures.
- Knowledge of electronics, sensors, and control systems.
- Knowledge of vibrational systems.
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermal sciences applications.
- Knowledge of hydraulics or hydrology, pumps, weirs, and flumes.
- Knowledge of materials, materials processing, and manufacturing.
- Knowledge of construction, building codes, ASTM, or AASHTO standards.
- Pre-existing knowledge and skills in some of these laboratory techniques are preferred.
- Skilled in computer-aided design.
- Skilled in the installation of software.
- Skilled in the use of automated manufacturing industry tools and equipment (electronic and pneumatic actuators, electronic sensors, PLC circuits, industrial networks, and OSHA regulations).
- Skilled in the use of hand and power tools and equipment (CNC, lathe, circular/table/rift saws, band saws, sanders, grinders, and welders).
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure, and/or troubleshoot laboratory testing systems and instruments.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end users.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Ability to lift 55 lbs. repeatedly.
- Willingness to work with faculty, learn lab specifics, and teach a new set of knowledge and skills is desired.
